U.S. Swimmer Ryan Lochte outpaced Michael Phelps in the men's 400m individual medley on Saturday, taking the nation's first gold medal of the 2012 Summer Olympics. But the win was not without controversy. According to a Mail Online article, Lochte was allegedly told he would not be able to claim his medal if he wore his diamond-encrusted tooth grill,
Lochte has worn a tooth grill in most of his major award ceremonies for the past several years. He said, "It's just a unique way of showing my personality to everyone." He had a new American flag grill made for the Olympics!
Lochte tried to wear his grill on the podium but was told by an Olympic official that if he did he wouldn't get his gold. He obeyed the order and removed the star-spangled grill to receive his medal on the podium. But he kept it in his pocket until after the national anthem and then popped it back in to pose for the cameras.
