Last week, Democrats and a few Republicans in the House finally passed a $1+ trillion infrastructure package that will provide money to repair and improve America's degrading roads, trains, bridges, water and electrical infrastructure, as well as expand broadband internet access to rural communities underserved by private companies. This investment will potentially create millions of jobs, make life better for everyone, and is long overdue.
And here's how Republicans reacted:
“I hope you die. I hope everybody in your fucking family dies.” That’s the voicemail Rep. Fred Upton, Republican from Michigan, found after he cast a vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill last Friday. The caller called him a “fucking piece of shit traitor.” Upton told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that he’s gotten other calls, and it’s like the others in that group of 13 have as well, because they’ve been targeted after poster child for deplorables Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia tweeted out the names and phone numbers of the 13 “traitors.”
This is your Republican party, ladies and gentleman. The (Congressional) nutjobs plus Trump have their base so riled up in hatred, violence and aggression, that voting to invest in America gets even Republican Congress folk labeled as traitors and invites death threats. (And you can't dismiss this as a single crank. A Republican congressman posted an anime video of himself KILLING Biden and AOC this week.)
I don't pretend to have the answer to this craziness, but it seems to me that we need to do better investing in education and demand more from sources of disinformation like FOX News and Facebook (Meta, whatever) and hold them accountable. Congress needs to hold its own people accountable when they foment violence.
The only way we get to that is to vote against Republicans at every opportunity. We need to exile Republicans from elected government at all levels until sanity retakes the party. And if it never does, then they should never hold power again.
