Sonoma County Clean Power - One Of First In Nation To Offer 100% Zero Carbon, Zero Nuclear Local Energy Option To Customers, Pays Up To Retail Prices To Buy All Solar, Wind Energy From Home Owners



Former U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson was in Santa Rosa in April 2013 along with Ivan Frishberg of Organizing for Action. They were mobilizing their volunteers in support of the Sonoma County Clean Power. We asked them about the importance of local action to deal with global climate change.

REAL, MEANINGFUL AND SUSTAINABLE CHANGE HAPPENS LOCALLY FIRST


As Lisa said; "there is nothing wrong with Washington, but the REAL change happens locally and regionally". Marin County in California was the first to implement a local green power initiative. Sonoma County is now the second county doing the same thing.

100% CLEAN ZERO CARBON, ZERO NUCLEAR OPTION OFFERED 


In Marin County, where this program has been running for several years, a 100% carbon free, renewable energy option is available on a voluntary choice basis for a few dollars more per month. Sonoma Clean Power offers the same option, for a slightly higher charge, per kilowatt hour, so there is no monthly fee involved. Those who use a small amount of power pay only a small amount more.

Over 50% of their customer base has chosen to sign up for this deep green form of energy in Marin. This organization is also actively recruiting and signing up local providers of 100% carbon free, renewable energy. The goal is to create local, green and sustainable jobs, plus zero carbon energy sources, that cannot be outsourced.


"Sonoma Clean Power is a planned municipal power agency that offers Sonoma County residents a choice of their utility provider. It promises to bring about more use of green energy sources and stimulate local production."

SONOMA CLEAN POWER GENERATES LOCAL JOBS, LOCAL CARBON FREE, AND NUCLEAR FREE ENERGY SOURCES


This video details the business and jobs that will be created through this program. It shows how an electric car can easily be powered by rooftop solar energy from a residence, the use of cutting edge "mini-split" heat pump air conditioning and heating that replaces natural gas furnaces, plus other technologies that lead to more local jobs. Using solar to power a car results in a less than 5 year payback for the solar system."



Woody Hastings is interviewed in the video above about Sonoma County Clean Power, and answers some of the most common questions about how it works, what it does, and the benefits involved. According to Woody, Sonoma County already produces about 50 MW of solar power, and this plan would help to double that amount at a fairly quick pace.

Sonoma County has one of the densest solar energy installations in the US, and this local energy production plan will only accelerate this process.

SONOMA CLEAN POWER OFFERS RETAIL RATE FEED IN TARIFF PAYMENTS TO LOCAL RENEWABLE SURPLUS ENERGY GENERATORS


One of the STRONGEST benefits of this plan is that it guarantees a healthy solar feed in tariff, which is a fancy term for paying an investor a fair return on their clean power local investment and clean power generated. Generating excess power in turn generates local jobs and more clean zero carbon, zero nuclear sustainable power sources for the local community. 

Without making this local clean energy change, it generally does not pay enough to get a return on investment beyond just paying 100% of the electric bill, because the solar feed in tariff only pays a wholesale rate of .04 cents per KW by existing utilities. This low return on investment is one reason why renewable energy has not taken off the way it should. Huge carbon and nuclear fuel monopolies are desperately trying to strangle the renewables in any way they can, because it will make them obsolete and worthless, if local counties and towns go the way of Sonoma Clean Power.

GRID STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Some people believe that solar is not a solution, because it is 'unstable'.  The same goes for wind, waves, water or any other source. Combining these various energy sources results in the MOST stable energy source possible. Wind and wave power is usually abundant when solar is not available during storms. Solar is abundant when the wind dies down. 

Water can be pumped uphill during the off peak hours, and then allowed to flow through power generating turbines during peak use times. 

Hydrogen gas can be created via any number of renewable energy sources, and then burned to create energy in the peak use times. Fuel cells are already being used, and it would be fairly simple to generate hydrogen gas that can be stored for burning in fuel cells later on, during times of need.

Electric vehicles can be used to self charge, as well as generating excess energy, plus serving as a peak use source of stored power.

There is no limit to how that power is produced or stored for later use. Picture thousands or even millions of vehicles hooked into the grid, charging themselves and also generating excess power to 'sell' to the utility? Each battery system on a vehicle may seem small, but when you multiply them by thousands or millions, they serve as a peak power 'buffer', smoothing out the peaks and valleys in the grid. 

Nuclear likes to claim it is the most 'stable' energy source, but then again, what happens when an earthquake and then a huge mega nuclear accident takes all of the nuclear plants in your country down? Japan lost over 50 nuclear power plants all at once, just due to an earthquake and a nuclear plant multiple reactor meltdown which almost destroyed their whole country overnight. What could be more unstable than that? No wind towers, solar panels or other renewable energy supplies were disrupted as the nuclear power plants were. Decentralized renewable energy sources are the MOST stable of all energy sources. Nuclear power is the MOST UNSTABLE, toxic, dangerous, and expensive energy source imaginable.

SONOMA CLEAN POWER PAYS RETAIL TO RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCERS, EVEN DURING PEAK USE, MOST EXPENSIVE TIMES 


Sonoma Clean Power pays RETAIL rates, even up to the highest rate during the peak periods to those generating power. A check is sent out once the total is more than $100 at the true up date, for solar generating customers. The answers are all there. All that people have to do is implement them, and quit complaining about how bad things are.

Solar and other renewables now PAY a handsome profit to local homeowners, land owners and business owners generating more than the amount of energy they use. It is now a business opportunity to sell local renewable energy to Sonoma Clean Power, and they will buy whatever you produce, with no limit. 

This is the same formula being used in Germany to produce massive, fast growth in the renewable energy market. Pay a fair price for renewable energy, guarantee it and you create a huge storm of investment, as it is not only the 'right' thing to do, it is also profitable.
