Simple 1950's Pinup "Girl Next Door" Beauty Makeup Tips

Lovable, funny, and sweet. Those are words that describe one of my personal favorite 1950’s female icons. The one and only Debbie Reynolds! She was a talented triple threat. During the 1950’s she sang, danced, and acted her way into America’s heart. Her looks and comedic timing were always impeccable. She was beautiful, extremely talented, classy and demure.  To this day, her smile and charming personality can light up an entire room! She is still viewed today as the quintessential 1950’s girl next door. She will forever be known as America’s sweetheart.

The following steps are listed to help you capture that perfect 1950’s Debbie Reynolds / girl next door pinup look!

1. Moisturize Use a lightweight moisturizer about 5 minutes before you start applying your base, allowing it to absorb into the skin better. Then use a makeup base primer to smooth out flaws and to keep makeup looking fresh. Recommended: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

2. Apply a makeup base in the best tone suitable for your skin. My favorite film quality foundations are Makeup Forever HD High Definition Foundations -they are oil free, silicone based, and a little goes a long way. I love them!

3. Translucent powder Is a must to set your foundation! Using a Powder puff, be sure to press the loose translucent powder firmly into your skin. (just dusting it over your face with a powder brush, will not set the makeup) you must actually press it into the skin, and then you may sweep off any excess with a powder brush! Recommended: Makeup Forever HD Translucent Powder.

4. Eyebrows Using an eyebrow pencil, make small-feathered strokes, always going up and outward. Blend in with an eyebrow brush. Continue line past arch to elongate brow. For a more polished look, you may choose to use a cake liner. Wet your thin angled liner brush with water, dip it in the cake liner, and gently apply using small feathered strokes up and out. Once again, continue your line past the arch to elongate your brow.
Recommended: Ben Nye cake liner in light brown, Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil

5. Eye Shadow To achieve a daytime pinup look, the eye shadow must be kept very clean and simple. Less is always more! Apply some light brown, taupe, or auburn shadow to the crease of your eyelid, and blend to the outer area below brow. Then add a peachy nude shadow over the entire lid, continuing up toward the brow bone. You may also want to softly blend the peachy nude shadow over the darker shade of shadow in the crease for an all over softer look.  Recommended: Mac Jest (lid, under brow), and Mac Soft Brown (in the crease blending outward).

6. Eyeliner you will want to use a cream/gel liner with an ultra fine angled brush. Do a very narrow line going from the top inner corner of your lid at lash line and gently go outward to the end of the lid extending the liner up and out just past your eyes. Once your eyes open, then you can continue to extend the eyeliner out more at an upward angle, creating the 1950’s cat eye/cat tails. My favorite eyeliners to use are The Bobbi Brown gel liners, because they are completely smudge proof and long lasting! Recommended: Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner Chocolate Shimmer, or Mac Liquid Liner in Boot Black

7. Mascara Apply a coat or two of black mascara to the lashes (both real and false). Make sure to apply mascara to both top and bottom lashes! Recommended: Dior Show Black Mascara

8. False Eyelashes Always black. My favorites are Ardel’s Demi Wispies, and 747 Mediums. They both have a natural outward flair.  Perfect for any 1950’s look, and natural looking!

9. Blush For the 1950’s blush tones, you always wanted to stick with Baby pinks, or light Rose colors. These shades will give you an innocent youthful glow to the apples of your cheeks! While smiling, use a large round fluffy blush brush and gently sweep the blush onto the apples of your cheeks in an upward motion. Recommended: Mac Dollymix, or Ben Nye Pixie Pink

10. Lips.  First you want to apply a natural pink/nude colored lip liner, lining your entire lip top and bottom. (The lip liner shade should be only 1 shade darker than your lipstick color.) Then with the lip liner, you will want to gently brush the liner pencil over the entire lip (top and bottom), filling in as much of the lip area as you can. After that, gently brush translucent powder over your lips. Setting the color. Wipe off any excess. You will then proceed with your lipstick color. Using a fine angled lip brush, brush the outer edges of your lips toward the center of your mouth with a natural pink/tawny lip color. For a modern finishing touch adding a bit of shine, lightly apply a natural pinky colored gloss.  Recommended: Mac Lip liner Subculture, Mac Lipstick Blossom Culture, or Makeup Forever Lacquered Lipstick #410  Soft Pink, #29 Satin Rosewood, Chanel Glossimer Pink Teaser

After you are finished with your natural 1950’s daytime pinup makeup, you easily can put your hair into a classic ponytail, and dress it up with a feminine head scarf!  In the 50’s, most women wore the classic head scarf, or carried one in her purse! It is a great way to polish up and complete any retro daytime hairdo. Here are some fabulous photos of classic 1950’s simple daytime hairstyles!

Some of these famous celebrity ladies capture the kind spirited Debbie Reynolds perfectly.  They are known for their natural beauty, witty humor, talent and grace!
